Prospect Insurance Brokers would like to congratulate Old Freemens who won the Surrey Shield for the fourth time in the competition’s 19-year history. Prospect are the main shirt sponsors of the club who play in Ashtead, Surrey.
The final was played on the 1st XV pitch at Esher RFC and Freemens were soon into their stride and dominated both territory and possession in the first half, playing with a breeze at their backs. This dominance led to an early unconverted try followed by two further unconverted scores before the half giving Old Frees a healthy 15-0 half time lead.
Old Freemens’ opponents Old Walcountians opened the scoring after half time with a penalty in front of the posts. Walcountians were finding their way back into the game however on turnover ball an excellent piece of counter attacking rugby saw Old Frees score a fourth try and pull further ahead.
Walcountians were given some hope after a fantastic solo effort by one of their wingers saw the lead reduced to 20-10 however as Walcountians chased the game a loose ball gave Freemen’s the last word as they broke away for a fifth try. A first successful conversion of the day saw the final score Old Freemens win 27-10.
The club finished a very respectable 3rd place in Surrey 1 and will be joined by Old Walcountians next season. Prospect would like to congratulate all those involved with the club this season and look forward to next season after a well-deserved summer break.
